Anesthesiology (also known as anesthesia or anesthetics) is the medical specialty concerned with the total perioperative care of patients before, during, and after surgery. The goal of the use of anesthesia is to safely support the patient's vital functions through the perioperative period. Anesthesia can be comprised of various injected and inhaled medications to produce a loss of sensation or consciousness in patients. The role of Anesthesiologists in modern medicine has turned towards knowledge and situational awareness of high-risk patients to improve safety and efficiency of the medical staff coordinating with the patient.
